Panama Thru the Lens

Panama Thru the Lens

By Bob Hislop

It is doubtful these days that anyone travels without some sort of camera. It could be on your phone, on your tablet, maybe a point and shot, or an expensive DSLR. No matter what you use, don’t come to Panama without a device to capture photographic images.

Panama is a gold mine for historic, interesting and beautiful pictures. Obviously, the Panama Canal is first and foremost on everyone’s travel to Panama bucket list. After that your focus becomes the people, the venues, the wildlife and the scenery of this growing American country.

Traditional Dress of Panama

When we first visited Panama it was on a cruise ship. Needless to say, we took care of our Panama Canal visit on that transit. However, we have been back many times taking friends and family to this monumental feat of engineering excellence. Now, with the expansion of the locks this marvel is a must to see and photograph.

If you are here for just a week or a few years you will see an endless supply of potential photographic images. The old city, Casco Viejo, is one of my favorite historic areas to photograph. Classic church structures, the President’s office, original buildings, and interesting shops make for excellent subjects.

Wander west on the Pan-American Highway, take in the beaches of Coronado, the mountains and waterfalls of El Valle or the surfers at Palmar.

All along this highway to the Costa Rican border there are fascinating place to visit and photograph. The local fairs and holidays bring out the beauty and joy of the Panamanian people. If you make it as far as David go either right to the mountains and jungles near Boquete or turn left and head to the Pacific Ocean at Playa La Barqueta, big waves and unpopulated beaches. No matter which way you go, there will be lots to photograph. You might even find some hidden gems of your own.
