12 Nov Libre de Basura: Creating a Litter Free Panama
By Steven Hensel
Libre de Basura is only two years old but its accomplishments are many.
Libre de Basura (LDB) essentially means “Litter Free” it is probably best known for their monthly beach clean ups; but there is actually so much more. Started by Alison Date, Ray Claude, Patrick Jennings and Steven Hensel dozens of volunteers have joined the group to become one of the most effective efforts in the region to address the dire effects of litter on the environment, animals and humans alike.
Alison, a former school teacher, has developed a curriculum for K through 12 that includes hands on experiments and lessons that engage the kids as they learn about what litter is, how long the various types last and which types do what harm to whom. Highlighting the need to properly dispose of litter is stressed. The lessons have been translated to Spanish and are available to any teacher in Panama for free.

LDB began experimenting with placing garbage cans first at the major bus stop across from the entrance to Coronado. The impact was immediate as they learned that given the choice most people will use the cans. The challenge here and other places where the receptacles have been placed is getting regular pickups and keeping the containers as they are sometimes stolen for the value in the metal. Efforts have also been made to get business owners to take more of an interest in keeping their immediate areas cleaner.
Behind this bus stop lies the Eisenmenn Elementary School where LDB has encouraged the kids to be actively involved with keeping the schoolyard litter free. This is also where Alison developed her groundbreaking curriculum painstakingly documenting each activity with her writings and photographs.
Another important development to further LDB’s mission has been to support and foster the development of a children’s book written by Roberto Diaz of the beaches area. More than a year in the making the beautifully illustrated and entertaining book follows two Panamanian kids as they discover the truths about litter and its negative impacts on the country, animals and people that they love. It is hoped to eventually get the final version into schoolrooms throughout the country as LDB firmly believes that the ultimate solution to the litter problems lie in the ongoing education of the children.

LDB and Roberto have now put together a mockup of the book which will be presented at the Beach Business Networking meeting on Tuesday morning November 21 at 8:15. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting held at the restaurant Nazca 21 above Machetazo.
All that are interested in keeping up with LDB’s progress and activities are encourage to “Like” them on Facebook. Regular updates and events are posted there.
Thank you to Libre de Basura, Roberto Diaz and the community for making a big difference for all of us!
