Impressions of Panama

By Natalie Warner

You have traveled all over Europe, explored various gems in North America and Africa, and now you are ready to tackle a portion of the Central American wilderness, known to the locals as Panama. What are your expectations? This is Christian’s story.

Christian considers himself a professional traveler, who has visited dozens of countries around the world. Although he made Coronado his home base during his two weeks in the country, he also visited Boquete, David, Casco Viejo, and San Blas.

The wet season has been longer than normal this year, which added an unexpected chill in the mountains of Boquete. Christian experienced a rafting trip near the Costa Rican border that was “very relaxing and professional.” He was also hoping to hike Volcán Barú, an active volcano, but the trip was canceled due to the weather. This is the highest point of elevation in Panama (3,475 meters high) and is one of the few places where you can see the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea on a clear day at the same time.

Christian traveled primarily by bus for his expedition in Panama. Although the buses were full, with exception to the music, he was amazed at the peaceful, quiet trips. The locals were very polite and pleasant. He never waited for more than 10 minutes for a bus, and found the bus system more efficient than many public transportation systems he has experienced in the world.

He also visited San Blas, an archipelago of hundreds of islands off the northern coast of Panama. It is home to the Kuna tribe, which values its culture and traditions. The Kuna are known for creating artwork on their bodies and clothes, known as Molas. “The beautiful islands reminded me of Fiji.” He explored some of the islands, learned traditions from the locals, and snorkeled in the crystal-clear waters.

The basic Spanish Christian knew allowed him to communicate for the most part with Panamanians. More than anything, he was surprised at the kindness of locals. “You have to make the first step. But once you do, they are very open.”

Tranquility. Beauty. Openness. Panama.

Christian will be back.
