Discover the Whales of Panama

Whale watching in Panama is spectacular and there is always a chance to see whales. But now is the perfect time to do go. The humpback whales are back!

Between July and October is the best season to see the migrating humpback whales here on the Pacific coast of Panama. Up to 2,000 gentle giants travel from the Southern Hemisphere, up to 6000 miles, to the warm waters of Panama to breed and give birth. Read our previous blog about the gentle giants and their journey to Panama. This will for sure encourage you to plan a trip to watch them while they are here.

Did you know

It is not just humpback whales that can be seen in Panama.  The Panama Marine life offers an abundance of wildlife and it is never a disappointment to take a trip out on the ocean. Occasionally you can spot blue whales, sperm whales, whale sharks and even orcas. Not to forget the entertainment you get when you encounter dolphins, manta rays and sea turtles.

There are many great spots throughout Panama for watching humpback whales while they are visiting us now. The Pearl Islands is almost guaranteed, with most sightings of whales during this time. So if you have not been to the island Contadora, this would be a great time to go.  Here is more information on Contadora  and places to stay

The Coiba National Park is as well a fantastic place to explore, not just for whale watching, but also for snorkel and dive trips. The national park with the island Coiba is located in the Golf of Chiriqui, also off the country’s Pacific Coast. Since the year 2005 it has been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site and the park with its nearly 40 islands is a must visit while in Panama. Our advice is to take at least a couple days to enjoy the tranquilo town of Santa Catalina. In town you will find many tour operators offering special whale watching excursions to the national park.

Pedasi and Isla Iguana are also famous destinations for whale excursions. The island and its surrounding wildlife refuge are known to be one of the top spots to go. While you are there take the opportunity and visit the island. White sandy beaches with crystal clear water are waiting for you. In addition it is a great place to see turtles (nesting time from April-Sep), iguanas and red or purple crabs.

Another fantastic place to see whales can be around the islands of Taboga, Otoque and Bona. If you don’t want to travel to the city for an opportunity to take a boat tour, contact Coronado Fishing Club to schedule a discovery tour. The boat tours are leaving from Vista Mar Marina and will take you around  the islands of Otoque, Estiva and Bona.

While there is never a guarantee to see whales, there is for sure a guarantee to see something exiting. We sure hope you have fun out there!
