Pipa Fria

Pipa Fria

By Natalie Warner

Drive along the Panamerican Highway in Panama and you will see numerous road stands with signs advertising pipa fria. Pipa fria, or coconut water, is a natural drink readily available throughout tropical climates. Coconuts not only have many health benefits, they are also versatile in cooking.

Coconut water is low in calories and high in electrolytes, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Bottled coconut water can be found in grocery stores, especially in Panama. However, unlike the bottled coconut water, roadside stands provide an opportunity to get it fresh and without any added sugars.

A few facts about coconuts:

  • Trees can bloom up to 13 times per year producing 60 coconuts each time.
  • It is rumored that coconut water was used in place of saline IV fluids during World War 2. Although not ideal, there have been studies in recent years as being a successful treatment for dehydration.
  • Coconut is said to be used in some cultures to help treat asthma and skin infections and is known for its antimicrobial properties.
  • The name came from Portuguese sailors who called it coco, meaning “grimmace” or “grinning face.” The word nut was added in English later on.
    • Coconuts are drupes, not nuts. Other drupes include cherries and peaches.
