ICE
By Bill McKibbon
ICE – If you are coming to Panama or are already here, (or anywhere in the world for that matter) you are going to need ICE. ICE is very important for keeping your drinks cold, but did you know that ICE is also needed for your SmartPhone! The ICE for your SmartPhone is slightly different than the traditional ice that you are used to….ICE on your SmartPhone means “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY”.
You are out and about and heaven forbid something should happen, but if it ever does and you are incapacitated to the point that you cannot speak or cannot recall…you will be happy that you entered your “In Case of Emergency” info onto the locked screen of your SmartPhone. The first responders will immediately look for your phone, we all have one right? They won’t know your pass code to open the phone, but they won’t need to because your ICE info is on your lock screen, but if you haven’t already done so, you are going to read the rest of this article and learn how to do just that. The first responders can then phone the contact that you have selected to be your person to call… Don’t select your spouse though as they more likely than not are going to be with you, and they too might be incapable of helping… If they are with you and they can help, all the better. Choose a trusted neighbor or trusted friend, someone who checks their phone or text messages frequently.
So here is how to enter your ICE info onto your screen, I will cover Android and Apple, but take note that with so many manufacturers of phones, different operating systems, sometimes the instructions do not work exactly as I have laid them out here…so just do a google search for our specific device if the instructions below don’t quite work.
In Case of Emergency: You can put an ICE contact on your Android phone by going into Settings->Lock Screen->Show Information ->Owner Information. Whatever you input there can be displayed on your Lock screen. What you type will then scroll across your locked screen.
On an Apple device, you can use the Health App to add info to the home screen with Medical ID. Open the Health App, click on Medical ID, fill out the information and select the choice to set as you lock screen.
If none of the above works, I have one final tip of how to do it yourself by taking a picture of an ICE card and then use that picture as the wallpaper for your lock screen. You can either hand write the info on a card, or you can get an ICE card from someplace like this -> GetIceCard.com
I hope you find this article useful but never need to actually use it.
Welcome to Panama.
